3 soldiers among 5 killed, top commander arrested with IEDs in J

Srinagar, Feb 9 (UNI) A Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO), two soldiers and a civilian were killed while two securitymen wounded in a fierce encounter in south Kashmir, a defence ministry spokesman said.

Elsewhere in Jammu and Kashmir one person was killed while police arrested four militants, including a top Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) commander before they could execute their plans to trigger blasts through mobile phones on the Kashmir highway.

The Defence spokesman said militants attacked a patrol party of 42 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) at village Arigam, Tral, about 40 km from here in south Kashmir district of Pulwama late last night.

Troops immediately retaliated and in the clash a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) and two soldiers were killed leaving two others wounded.

He said a civilian was also killed in the exchange of fire between militants and security forces. The injured were admitted to hospital here.

However, local people alleged that security forces killed a civilian Mohammad Afzal Kumar in his house after the militant attack.

This is the first major attack by the militants in Tral area of south Kashmir this year.

The Jammu and Kashmir police today registered a First Information Report (FIR) under section 302 Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) against the Rashtriya Rifles (RR) for allegedly killing a civilian in an encounter in south Kashmir last night.
