TN to file review petition against Cauvery final award

Chennai, Feb 8 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi tonight said the state would file a review petition before the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) as it had certain reservations over the final award delivered on Monday last.

'Like Karnataka, we too have certain reservations and we will approach the Tribunal again,' he told mediapersons at his party headquarters Anna Arivalayam here.

He said initial reports that the Tribunal had awarded 419 tmc ft of water to Tamil Nadu had shocked farmers in Karnataka.

However, the fact was that the Tribunal had taken into account annual availability of Cauvery water right from Kodagu to the lower anaicut while apportioning it among the states. But Karnataka would not release the entire quantity of 419 tmc ft to Tamil Nadu, he said.

Mr Karunanidhi said there was no major difference in the actual allocation made to Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The quantum of water to be directly received by Tamil Nadu would be more or less the same as Karnataka's allocation, he added.

He said this distinction was not understood by some in Karnataka who had instigated farmers and blown up the issue.
