Mumbai, Feb 8 (UNI) Mumbai Congress President Gurudas Kamat today said the central leadership of the party had not demanded his resignation following the local civic poll results in which the party failed to wrest power from the Shiv Sena-BJP.

Talking to reporters at the party office here, Mr Kamat said he had not met AICC chief Sonia Gandhi during his visit to Delhi after the results came in. ''I was there for the Parliamentary Standing Committee meeting, which is held before the Budget Session. But, I discussed the party's performance and analysis with the AICC general secretary Margaret Alva and submitted a detailed report to her,''he said.

Replying to questions, Mr Kamat said he has been hearing about the demand for his resignation from the media. ''Those who are demanding it have not told me directly. If my party leader asks, I will put in my papers immediately,'' he added.

To a query on whether he will put in his papers voluntarily, Mr Kamat said he would do so when the time comes.

Asked about Revenue Minister Narayan Rane's reported remarks blaming the Congress party for defeat of his nominees, Mr Kamat said he had read about it in the newspapers, but would not like to comment on them.

To a question that Ms Gandhi had refused to meet the Congress leaders from the state and city, Mr Kamat said she was busy with assembly elections being held this month. ''I will be going back to Delhi next week,''he said.

Commenting on reports that Ms Gandhi was unhappy with the party's performance in Mumbai, Mr Kamat said, ''all of us are unhappy.'' Asked about Congress leaders including Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh urging Sharad Pawar to merge his NCP with the Congress, Mr Kamat said he had different views on the issue. ''but, I would not like to make any comments and create a controversy,'' he said.

Earlier, Mr Kamat felicitated the party's newly elected corporators and said Congress was committed to the development of Mumbai.

''Our elected representatives would work for ensuring that Mumbai and its citizens get their due in terms of basic amenities,'' he added.

Mr Kamat said a two day training camp for the newly elected corporators would be organised before the newly constituted civic body meets next month.
