Night temperature dips following rains in North-West region

Chandigarh, Feb 8 (UNI) Night temperatures again dipped in north-west region following rains at many places in the plains overnight.

Meanwhile, a person was killed yesterday due to lightning at Diwana village in Pehowa sub-division of Kurushetra district. He was working in the fields when the lightning struck him.

The sky remained overcast at many places as the Sun played hide and seek during the day. However, the minimum temperatures hovered one degree to three degree Celsius above normal in the region.

The weather office has predcited light to moderate rain or snow at few places in Himachal Pradesh and light to moderate rain or thundershowers at isolated places in Punjab and Haryana during the next 24 hours.

Rain lashed certain areas in Punjab overnight with Patiala, where the minimum temperature fell to 9.2 degrees, recording 3.5 mm rainfall. The minimum temperature also dropped at Ludhiana and Amritsar, respectively showing 9.0 degree and 8.3 degree, two degree above normal.

Rain also lashed several areas in Haryana, bringing considerable fall in the mercury in the state. The minimum plummeted at Karnal, Ambala, Hissar and Narnaul, respectively recording 8.0 degrees, 8.4 degree, 9.3 degree and 10.0 degree. Karnal measured 8.0 mm rainfall while Nelokheri recorded 34.6 mm and Chachroli 28.0 mm downpour till 0830 hours.

Cold wave conditions revived in many parts of Himachal Pradesh after a snowfall in higher reaches of the state yesterday. The night temperatures also dipped in the hilly state with Bhuntar in Kullu district recording 5.6 degree, three degree above normal, and Sundernagar in Mandi district 5.0 degree. Shimla, which was lashed by rain, showed 3.3 degrees, one degree above normal.

Intense cold wave swept tribal areas of the state with the mercury hovering below freezing point. Kalpa in tribal Kinnaur district recorded minus 3.5 degree Celsius.

Chandigarh and its adjoining areas also recorded a decline in the temperature following overnight rain. The city registered minimum temperature at 11.0 degrees and 5.6 mm rainfall.
