Jaya asks for probe into information leak
Chennai, Feb 8 (UNI) AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa today alleged that classified information concerning national security was leaked out from from the office of the Union Minister of State for Home and asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to order a probe.
'''The needle of suspicion pointed to Union Minister of State for Home Affairs S Reghupathy's private secretary Md Shakeel Akhter, IPS, and under close surveillance, it was found he had connection with several foreign High Commissions and had secretly exchanged information with them through the cell phone,'' she claimed in a statement here.
Ms Jayalalithaa said even before Mr Akhter could be subjected to investigation by the Centre, he was ''hastily repatriated'' to Tamil Nadu and had been posted as the new DIG of Kancheepuram range.
Mr Akhter, a native of Bihar, belonged to the Tamil Nadu cadre and had been Mr Reghupathy's private secretary right from the day the Minister assumed office, she said.
Ms Jayalalithaa said the DMK Minister, who was in a position to safeguard national security, had shied away when mediapersons raised questions about the alleged leakage of secrets.
She expressd surprise at how the Union Minister ''remained oblivious to his PA's activities'' during the past two-and-a-half years, she said both Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and Mr Reghupathy should explain to the people on whose recommendation Mr Akhtar was appointed to the post.
''Did Mr Reghupathy opt for the IPS officer or did Mr Karunanidhi depute him to the post,'' she asked.
