India advanced in Statistics, but poor in research: C R Rao

Tirupati, Feb 8 (UNI) Noted professor in statistics and Padma Vibhushan awardee C R Rao today said India was very much advanced in statistics but had failed to provide more research scholars in it.

Addressing a press meet here, Mr Rao, who offered worship of Lord Venkateswara at Tirumala temple, said the country was producing only graduates in statistics, which played a major role in all fields, like prediction of terrorist attacks, DNA tests, prediction of earthquakes, manufacturing industry and others.

Mr Rao, responsible for establishing the Asian Statistical Institute (ASI) in Japan for development of Statistics in the South East Asian region was honoured by the US President with the Medal of Science and a citation. He had received 29 honorary doctorates from universities in 16 countries around the world.

To promote basic research in mathematics and computer sciences and encourage study in high schools in India, the C R Rao Advanced Institute for Mathematical and Computer Sciences would be set up in Hyderabad for which Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy would lay the foundation stone on February 20, 2007.
