Haryana forms women NGOs in villages for their uplift

Chandigarh, Feb 8 (UNI) The Haryana government has launched a Sakshar Mahila Samooh (SMS) movement in 6500 villages of the state for raising the socio-economic as well as educational status of the women.

An official spokesman said the SMS consisted of most of the educated women of the village and the girls studying in plus one and plus two.

This non-governmental organisation, he said, would be a registered as a society and serve virtually as village NGO to work for overall improvement in the personality of women folk of the village.

The spokesman said the SMS would act as a resource support system for gram panchayats and their women sub committees to promote awareness among the masses about the key social issues relating to girls and women such as alarming sex ratio, literacy, opportunities for economic empowerment of women, health, hygiene and environment.
