Four awarded RI for smuggling heroin to Sri Lanka

Madurai, Feb 8 (UNI) A special court have convicted and sentenced a 42-year-old woman and three others to rigorous imprisonment (RI) for attempting to smuggle six kg of heroin worth Rs six crore, procured from Mumbai, to Sri Lanka in 2003.

Special Judge Manickam found the quartet guilty under the Narcotics and Psychotrophic Substances Act and sentenced them to three years RI, besides awarding a fine of Rs 15000 on each of them.

The judge directed that the amount of Rs 24,900 seized from them during their arrest in March 29, 2003, be deposited in the government treasury.

The prosecution submitted that the four were nabbed from the city outskirts by sleuths of the Narcotics Intelligence Bureau (NIB) on a tip off from NIB unit at Thiruvananthapuram.

The convicted were Saraswathy (42) of Kolathur in Chennai, Perumal (69), Khaja Mohammed (54) and Murugan (43), all from Ramanathapuram.
