New Delhi, Feb 8 (UNI) The BJP today took strong exception to Congress President Sonia Gandhi inaugurating the 33rd National Games at Guwahati, breaking the convention that this should only be done the head of the state or government or Chief Minister of the State.

BJP Spokesman Prakash Javadekar said that the inauguration by Mr Gandhi was ''totally inappropriate and unprecedented''.

''If the heads of the state were not available, the heads of various sports organisations inaugurate a sports meet and never in the history of the world has a political leader been asked to inaugurate a sports meet'', he said.

"Ours is not merely a technical objection and none can hold an established convention to ransom," he added.

Asked about CPI-M leader Brinda Karat taking exception to cricketer Rahul Dravid taking part in mass Surya Namaskar at Nagpur, Mr Javadekar said he was ''surprised'' at the attack on the sports personality for attending a mass fitness programme.
