Chennai, Feb 8 (UNI) AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalaithaa never criticised the judiciary, when she was at the helm of affairs, as alleged by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, former State Law Minister D Jayakumar said today.

Reacting to Mr Karunanidhi's charge that Ms Jayalalithaa, too, had castigated the judiciary and had no locus standi to criticise him, Mr Jayakumar, in a statement here, said the DMK leader had levelled the false charges to bring disrepute to his leader.

On Mr Karunanidhi's charge that Ms Jayalalithaa had foisted a criminal case against the son-in-law of a judge, he said the AIADMK leader had no reason to develop any animosity towards the judge, Justice A R Lakshmanan, and foist the case.

Even the judge himself would not accept the charge, he said adding the judge's son-in-law was already facing some cases.

Mr Jayakumar also denied that the former chief minister had cut the water and power supply to the residence of former High Court judge Justice M Srinivasan.

Till he was elevated to the Himachal Pradesh High Court as Chief Justice, the judge lived at his own house in T Nagar.

The judge had never occupied the official residence and power and water connections were not cut, he added.

When former leader of the Opposition S R Balasubramanian drew to her attention in the Assembly, an observation made by a High Court judge that both the police and government pleader were useless, Ms Jayalalithaa had only said that judges were also humans.

Mr Karunanidhi, at a marrige function had allowed his cabinet colleage and senior party leader Arcot N Veerasamy to castigate at the judiciary, he alleged.

After realising the repercussions of their criticism against the judiciary, the Chief Minister was making a hasty retreat now, Mr Jayakumar said.
