MP: Youth fined for turning away pregnant wife

Hoshangabad (MP), Feb 7: A local court has imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 and directed a youth to keep his pregnant wife with him or in default to bear the maintenance and medical costs for delivery.

Judicial Magistrate T P Sondhia issued the order on a complaint by tribal woman Dharamwati Korku on Monday, who was turned out of home by one Pappu a year after marriage, questioning the parenthood of the child in her womb.

The judge directed Mr Pappu to keep the woman with him or in default to pay Rs 1,000 before marriage, Rs 2,000 during delivery and Rs 1,000 every month, besides compensation of Rs 20,000 for causing physical and mental torture.

Mr Pappu was released on a bail of Rs 20,000 and a personal bond of like amount. The judge also suggested to initiate action under section 493 IPC if Pappu did not concede.

Meanwhile, Ms Dharamwati has taken shelter under a tamarind tree at village Baijanpur village of this district with a vow to seek her child's rights.
