Muslim Mahapanchayat on Feb 10

New Delhi, Feb 7 (UNI) About 30 Muslim social organisations have called a Mahapanchayat of the OBCs here on February 10 to collectively press for five recommendations laid down by the Sachar Committee.

Among the demands are SC status to dalit Muslims and dalit Christians, classification of central OBC list into backward and most backward.

It assumes significance in view of excluding the forward Muslim caste from the congregation. The forward Muslims have of late sought to impress upon the government to treat the Muslim community as homogenous.

Sceptical that the reservation would divide more than uplifting the community, they wanted the reservation to be extended to the whole community, sending the backwards into a huddle.

The meet would also draw the Central government's attention to the absence of any implementing agency for the Prime Minister's new 15-point programme for the welfare of minorities held in Hyderabad on 9th and 10th January.

All India Urdu Educational Committee chairman Mohd Jaleel Pasha wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last month to save the community from abyss.

It may be mentioned that newly unveiled 15-point programme addressed socio-economic problems of the Muslims in particluar and the minority in general.

Establishment of women's universities, separate directorate for women, minorities and urdu education, strict implementation of 15-point programme in ministry of home, defence, banks and railways should be the most preferred methods, according to Mr Pasha.
