New Delhi, Feb 6: In the ongoing effort to provide comfort to commuters between Delhi and Gurgaon, Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways Thiru T R Baalu today opened in traffic flyovers Mahipalpur in Delhi and Udyog Vihar Crossing on National Highway-8 in Gurgaon.

Minister of State in the Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways K H Muniyappa, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Haryana Chief Minister B S Hooda were present on the occasion.

These two flyovers had been constructed as part of the Delhi-Gurgaon Access-Controlled (Expressway) project being implemented on a Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis.

With the opening of the flyovers, the stretch between milestone 'KM 15' to 'KM 28' of NH-8, in Gurgaon, would provide a smooth ride to commuters. It would now take approximately only 20 minutes to cover this stretch compared to the earlier 40 to 50 minutes in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

The opening of the flyovers would provide immense relief to commuters travelling from Gurgaon side towards Delhi. Traffic in this direction would now move straight from Rajokari to Mahipalpur/Palam instead of detour via old NH-8 (old Gurgaon Road).

This facility would reduce the travel distance on Rajokari-Mahipalpur reach by more than three km. Also, movement of light/medium vehicles through the underpasses at these locations would immensely benefit more than 50,000 inhabitants on either side of this stretch in Gurgaon.

Special attention had been given for pedestrian movement at these locations.

The opening of Mahipalpur (length 1800 m) and Udyog Vihar (length 1500 m) flyovers came after Sector-31 and Jharsa flyovers which were opened in November last year. The Completion of other flyovers at South City and IFFCO Chowk were also being expedited, targeting their opening by end of this month.

This would further provide comfort to the commuters, both passenger and commercial vehicles, on this important route to Jaipur and Mumbai.

The entire National Highway Authority of India project, from Rao Tula Ram Marg Junction till 'KM 42' in Haryana, was likely to be completed by September 2007.
