TMC activists put up road blocks to protest land acquisition
Kolkata, Feb 6(UNI) Movement of vehicular traffic remained disrupted for more than an hour when Trinamool Congress activists put up road blocks in different parts of the city in protest against land acquisition and the alleged police atrocities on protesters yesterday.
The party workers, largely drawn from the youth wing, put up blockades at seven important intersections, including Dhakuria, Hazra, Manicktala and B K Pal Avenue holding traffic from 1400 hrs to 1599 hrs.
However, there were no reports of road blockades from the districts today.
Police said no untoward incidents had been reported from anywhere in the city.
The programme was announced yesterday by Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee, who resolved to carry on with her movement against land acquisition at Singur and elsewhere in the state.
Yesterday, Trinamool supporters clashed with police at Kamarkundu in Hooghly district, where Ms Banerjee was supposed to hold a rally before visiting Singur for addressing a meeting in protest against police action against members of Krishi Jami Raksha Committee who had uprooted and burnt down fencing poles around the proposed site for the Tata Motors's small car project on Sunday.
Ms Banerjee, however, cancelled the programme after prohibitory orders under section 144 Cr PC were re-imposed in Singur following disturbances.
Declaring that she would go ahead with her 'Singur Chalo' programme on February 10n despite re-imposition of prohibitory orders under 144 Cr PC, the Trinamool leader also announced a set of agitational programmes, including a procession to be taken out tomorrow involving a cross section of people, including intellecutals and social activists.
