Sheila inaugurates Signature Bridge

New Delhi, Feb 6 (UNI) Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today laid the foundation stone for a Signature Bridge at Wazirabad in East Delhi, aimed at facilitating smooth flow of traffic between the National capital and Uttar Pradesh.

Addressing a huge gathering on this occasion, the Chief Minister described the proposed Signature Bridge as a milestone in making Delhi a world-class city.

She said the new bridge and a vast tourist centre to be set up in the area would help give a facelift to entire East Delhi, which used to be described as an under-developed area, and also bring Delhi on the map of the state-of-the-art tourist centers.

To be built at an estimated cost of Rs 460 crore, the new bridge would be commissioned well before the commencement of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Speaking on the occasion, local MP Sandeep Dikshit expressed hope that the new bridge would become lifeline of East Delhi.

Delhi Urban Development Minister A K Walia, who was also present, announced that an 8-lane East Delhi Ring Road would soon be commissioned to provide relief to commuters and passengers.

Delhi Education Minister Arvinder Singh expressed confidence that Delhi would be known by its proposed Signature Bridge as it would be constructed with all international specifications. This would also provide a vast tourist destination in Delhi.

Till now, the existing two lane wide barrage-cum-bridge at Wazirabad has been serving as a vital link between Delhi and UP areas for the last fifty years.

However, the tremendous increase in the volume of road traffic using this bridge has far exceeded its designed capacity. Therefore, a new bridge is proposed on the downstream of existing bridge cum barrage at Wazirabad. The proposed bridge will connect NH-1 near existing T-point at Wazirabad on Western bank and Marginal Bund Road-Wazirabad Road (Road No.59) intersection at Khajuri Khas on Eastern bank of the river Yamuna.
