Nagpur, Feb 6 (UNI) One person was killed and ten others injured when police today opened fire to disperse a rampaging mob, protesting long hours of load shedding in nearby Umrer town, which indulged in large-scale violence and arson.

Indefinite curfew was clamped in the area. Police said trouble broke out this afternoon when people participating in a morcha over the issue went berserk, torching a local police station and tehsil office besides government and police vehicles.

They also ransacked the house of the local MLA Rajendra Mulak, and tried to set fire a sub-station of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL) in the town, about 45 kms from here.

Police initially resorted to a lathi-charge and later fired teargas shells to control the mob. The police then fired several rounds to contain the violence.

The deceased was identified as Yuvraj Kumre. Of the injured in the violence and lathi-charge, eight of them have been brought to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Nagpur for treatment, police said.

''The situation is now tense but under control,'' he added.
