Dead fishes washed ashore from polluted river
Kolhapur, Feb 6 (UNI) A large number of dead fishes in the Panchganga river have been washed ashore near the powerloom town of Ichalkaranji for the past two years.
The Anti-Pollution Action Committee, has claimed that the death of the fishes have been due to the high level of pollution in the river, caused by the discharge of toxic effluent by sugar mills.
The pollution in the Panchganaga river has become very serious over the past four to five years. Several organisations here have launched a sustained campaign to focus attention on the issue, yet no action has been initiated a spokesperson of the committee said.
The water from the Panchganga river is used for agricultural purposes and even used for drinking by the villagers. If immediate steps are not taken to reduce the pollution, it could create serious health problems, the spokesman said.
