Couple charred to death, 500 huts gutted in fire

Chennai, Feb 6 (UNI) A middle-aged couple was charred to death and more than 500 huts were gutted in a fire at Dommykuppam in Mylapore area of the city early today.

Police said the deceased were identified as Charles (55) and his wife Vitoria (50).

On information, fire and rescue service personnel rushed to the spot and put out the blaze after battling for few hours.

A kerosene lamp, which accidentally fell on the side wall constructed with thatched materials in one of the huts, was said to be the reason for this mishap, police added.
