Srinagar, Feb 6 (UNI) Police today arrested about 26 Hurriyat Conference (Omar) supporters and burst teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to disperse processionists, protesting against the fake encounter killings.

The agitators led by senior Hurriyat leader Nayeem Khan were marching towards civil lines from its headquarter when police tried to stop them at Rajbagh crossing.

Police later fired teargas shells and resorted to baton charge after the processionists refused to disperse and insisted they should be allowed to march towards historic Lal Chowk.

The processionists also pelted stones on police.

About a dozen persons received minor injuries in the incident.

Later, police took into custody Mr Khan and 25 other Hurriyat supporters.

Two police personnel were also injured when a mob pelted stones on their vehicle in down town city. The injured were admitted to hospital.

Reports of protest by people against the fake encounter killings were received from other parts of the valley.

The HC has extended its support to Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) one-day strike call for today in protest against killing of four innocent persons by Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police in fake encounters in Ganderbal area.
