SC turns down PIL on online lotteries in Maharashtra and WB
New Delhi, Feb 5 (UNI) The Supreme Court today dismissed a PIL seeking a ban on online lotteries in Maharashtra and West Bengal.
The petitioner, Bibhash Karmakar, pleaded before the bench comprising Justices B N Agrawal and P P Naolekar that the lotteries have ruined a large number of families and the students were also falling prey to the greed of becoming rich overnight.
The petitioner pleaded for a ban on the online lotteries from 0900 hrs to 2200 hrs. But the court observed that it was not possible to give such a relief.
The petitioner had also contended that these lotteries were nothing more than an extension of gambling and speculation which is a criminal offence.
