Orissa DGP gets further reprieve till February 15

Cuttack, Feb 5 (UNI) Orissa High Court today extended the interim protection to Director General of Police(Home Guard and Fire Services) B B Mohanty which prevents him from being arrested by the Rajasthan police till February 15.

On January 16 Justice L K Mohapatra had granted interim protection to Mohanty till February 5 on a petition moved by the DGP for an anticipatory bail apprehending arrest by the Rajasthan police in a case relating to the jumping of parole by his son Biti Mohanty, convicted in the Alwar rape case.

The judge, while granting interim protection, called for the case diary and other documents from a Rajasthan court, which had issued a warrant for the Orissa DGP.

Justice Mohapatra further extended the interim protection to B B Mohanty as counsel P K Padhi, appearing on behalf of the Rajasthan government, sought a week's time to produce the records called by the court.

The judge while granting time, ordered that the next date of the case be posted on February 15 and observed that till that time the interim protection granted to Mohanty would stand.

The Additional District Magistrate of Jaipur had issued a warrant of attachment against Mohanty and directed the Orissa Chief Secretary to attach his property if he failed to deposit the surety bond of Rs 50,000 within 15 days.

The warrant had been issued against the DGP for allegedly aiding his son Biti, sentenced to seven years' jail term by a fast track court for raping a German woman, jump parole on December 4 last.

Biti, lodged in Jaipur central jail, was granted parole and was supposed to report on December 4 but failed to do so and went untraced. His father had been maintaining that he had no idea about the whereabouts of his son and that he had not signed the parole bond.

The Rajasthan police, on the other hand,had been alleging that the DGP had released his son on parole after furnishing the necessary document.They arrived here in December and again in January to trace Biti but failed on both the occasions.
