Nalanda University entrance gate found in excavation
Patna, Feb 05 (UNI) The Archeological Survey of India has claimed to have discovered the entrance gate of the ancient Nalanda University.
The ASI team led by Patna circle chief Phanikant Mishra said the main entrance of the university was found about 1000 metres away from the ruins of Nalanda, during an excavation work at Bargaon village.
The 1200 feet high gate dates back to the ancient Buddha period, then popularly known as Dhammakhand.
Mr Mishra said the mound, spread over an area of 20 acres, was located in the north of Nalanda. Dhammakhand and Prangan were supposed to be the names of the gates, he added.
He said the analysis of the excavated mound would bring a new dimension to history. The team had also discovered a wall on the mound, he said.
