Tsunami has not affected fish population: FSI
Port Blair, Feb 4 (UNI) The Fishery Survey of India(FSI) today said tsunami has not affected the population of fish like shark, sword fish and tunas in the sea around Nicobar islands.
Complaints recieved from the islanders regarding a fall in their population after tsunami stands negated by the FSI's recent survey, Zonal Director of FSI A Ambrose told UNI today.
Mr Ambrose said the Marine Fishery Survey Vessel Blue Marlin, attached to Port Blair Zonal Base of FSI conducted drift long line fishing using light sticks for Sword fish in the western part of Nicobar waters.
Results of the hooking rate was 0.9 to 4.4 per cent, he said.
According to the survey, a highest hooking rate of 4.4 per cent was registered in the western part of Car Nicobar waters.
In total 88 fishes were caught weighing 2.3 tones. The aggregate hooking rate for Sharks was 1.2 per cent, which was the highest,followed by 0.5 per cent of sword fish Off Southwest Hutbay, Mr Ambrose added.
