Development can't be imposed: CM

Krishnagore, Feb 4 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee here today said the government has slowed down the land acquisition process in the wake of Opposition Trinamool Congress' renewed protests against the proposed Tata Motor's small car factory.

Addressing a public meeting organised by the Nadia Zilla Committee of CPI(M) on the recent turmoils in Singur and Nandigram, Mr Bhattacharjee said development could not be imposed on anyone.

He said various MNCs, especially from Japan and Indonesia, were interested to invest in the state but people were unable to understand the growth prospects.

''People are getting carried away by the allegations of the Opposition regarding farm land acquisition for various projects including SEZs,'' he said adding that once the projects start, then it would bring overall development to the state and people in general.

'' Such projects will increase job opportunities and rural areas like Singur and Nandigram will witness some major developments,'' the Chief Minister claimed.

''West Bengal is the leading state in the agricultural sector and the government is trying its best to develop the field of industrialisation,'' he said.

He further added that nothing could be achieved through agitations and violence.

''The BJP and Trinamool Congress are trying to mislead the mass for their own vested interests and we will never allow this to happen. People have to know the difference between the good and bad,'' he added.

''They want to create a Gujarat-like situation here through violence and riots, people should be aware of their motives,'' he said.

Mr Bhattacharjee further admitted that the CPI(M) was forced to join hands with the Congress at the Centre so as not to allow the BJP to come into power again.
