Uganda Dy PM calls for new Gandhian movement

Coimbatore, Feb 3 (UNI) Republic of Uganda Deputy Prime Minister A M Kirunda Kivejinja today called for a new global movement on Gandhian path to fight violence prevalent in the world.

Talking to reporters here, Mr Kirunda, who had come to India as a special invitee to participate in the Centenarary Sathyagraha Celebrations at New Delhi, said Mahathma Gandhi had proved that 'Ahimsa' can win over 'Himsa' during the freedom struggle.

He said at present violence dominated the world and it was the need of the hour to start a movement based on Gandhiji's priciples.

On Iraq war, Mr Kirunda said the war had killed two million people and displaced another two million.

He said the Iraq war had clearly showed that war was not the way to settle disputes.

Referring to his country's economy, he said 38 per cent of the 26 million people belonged to Below Poverty Line and the government had initiated many welfare measures to uplift the people.
