Four injured in clashes after announcement of BMC results

Mumbai, Feb 3 (UNI) Four people were injured in riots that erupted after results of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) election were announced in different parts of the metropolis.

Police have registered nine cases of rioting in Kherwadi, Antop Hill and Colaba areas in north-central, south-central and south Mumbai and similar number of clash cases between political parties in Bhandup, Kurla, Shivaji Park, Antop Hill and Dadar areas yesterday, police said today.

The rioting cases were registered against hundreds of workers of various political parties like the Shiv Sena, the Congress, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and some of them in the incidents have already been arrested by the police.

Mr Praveen Sitaram Sawant (36) and Shankar Narsinh Raghukar (45) were injured in stone-pelting by the activists of the NCP at Kherwadi in north-central Mumbai. Thereafter, Shiv Sena party workers ransacked the office of Santosh Tukaram Dhuvali (41), who was reported to be the NCP worker.

From Antop Hill, police have arrested 50 Shiv Sainiks and other activists on charges of manhandling a Congress candidate and ransacking his office.

From Colaba, 13 people were arrested on charges of rioting for violating the notification of unlawful assembly issued by the Police Commissioner.

One Pramod Dhondu suffered head injuries when angry Shiv Sainiks manhandled him, the police added.
