New Delhi, Feb 2 (UNI) The United States is trying to ''sabotage'' the elections to Nepal's constituent assembly in June to secure its ''political interests'' in the South Asian region, a senior Nepali Maoist leader said here today.

''The US wants to have a puppet government in the form of the Monarchy in Nepal which will help it call the shots in the region.

America wants to control two Asian giants --India and China-- through Nepal,'' Polit Buro member of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) Chandra Prakash Gajurel told a news conference here.

In November, a peace deal ended a decade of bloodshed and elections were announced for the constituent assembly in mid-June.

The assembly would then be tasked to write a new constitution and decide the fate of Nepal's monarchy. The polls were a key demand of the Maoists, who fought the monarchy.

Mr Gajurel, head of the party's international affairs department, said the US wants to push its ''own vested agenda'' in the region through Nepal.

''Nepal as an economy is, too, small for the US... because of its strategic location between India and China, America is interested in the country. US wants to control politics in China and India,'' he said.

Holding the US and Nepal's Monarchy responsible for the recent violence in the country's southern Terai plains, he said people opposed to the constituent assembly were instigating the communal flare up.

''When a democratic republic is established in Nepal, the King will have to go and that will not suit the US.... They are fomenting trouble to derail that process,'' he added.

''Some hooligans from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar on instructions of some vested interests from Nepal are also part of this violence,'' he claimed.

Lauding India's role in facilitating setting up of a democratic republic in Nepal, Mr Gajurel said since New Delhi had given up its ''twin pillar'' theory, envisaging coexistence of the Constitutional Monarchy and parliamentary form of Government, its role was positive.

''India respects the wishes of the Nepali people.... Its role in facilitating a meeting between Maoists and seven party alliance and now the elections is very positive,'' he said.

''India is helping Nepal to form its own Democratic Republic,'' he added.
