Jadavpur Univ, KMC launches solid waste management project
Kolkata, Feb 02 (UNI) Jadavpur University, in association with KMC, will launch a solid waste management project for a cleaner city.
Speaking to mediapersons, JU professor Dr Sadhan Kumar Ghosh said here today that "Project-SHG for cleaner Kolkata" would start on February 8.
Anti-littering and plastics waste management project would be introduced in ward nos 56, 58 and 59 in borough seven with a population of nearly 4 lakh, he said.
Initially dry wastes will be collected by Self Help Group from houses of the locality, these would be stored and segregated at four "intermediate Storing CUM Sorting Station (IS3), one in each ward.
The segregated wastes would be taken to a central station in either ward 58 or 59 where GRPPWP would be installed, GRPPWP (Green recycling process Plant of Waste Plastics) has been developed and patented at the Centre for Quality Management System, Jadavpur University. The whole process would convert waste plastics into usable marketable products.
At least 200 to 250 members of Self Help Groups (SHG) of a locality would be involved, he added.
The "committee for antilittering initiatives in Kolkata" was formed by Centre for Quality Management System, Jadavpur University, Indian Plastics Federation, West Bengal Science Forum, Kolkata Nagarik Sammelan and 10 other NGOs.

The schools would be given two bins for collection of dry and wet wastes and dispose them to the KMC representatives. The programme would be initially launched in 50 schools. The concerned teachers have already been trained during our anilittering campaign.
