Visakhapatnam, Feb 2 (UNI) Airports Authority of India (AAI) General Manager G Suresh today said the new runway with Instrument Landing System (ILS) and night landing facility would become operational in the Vizag airport in the next two months.

Speaking at a meeting organised by the Air Travellers Association of India (ATAI) here, he said the new runway would start functioning from the first week of April.

A team from AAI corporate headquarters and Director General of Civil Aviation would arrive here to examine the night landing facility and the ILS at the airport.

The new terminal of the airport to accommodate nearly 800 domestic and international passengers, would be ready by the middle of 2008. The passenger traffic would also be doubled by 2008 from the present 300,000 annually.

To prevent the runway from being flooded during rains, the irrigation department had taken up channeling work of Meghadrigedda reservoir at a cost Rs 76 crore, he said.

Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) Chairman and Managing Director Ajit Tewari said the recent cancellation of flights for ten-days at Vizag airport had resulted in loss of lakhs of rupees for bringing the imported machinery equipment which were diverted to Chennai and Mumbai.
