Court convits three police officials for custodial death
New Delhi, Feb 2 (UNI) A local court today convicted three Delhi Police personnel for killing a person in police custody, who was nabbed for lifting stereos from cars in Mahrauli area in South Delhi ten years back.
Additional Sessions Judge S P Garg held former Head Constable Rajbir Singh, Constables Bachchu Singh and Ramesh for beating to death Indal Singh who was picked up by the police on charges of lifting stereo from a car on January 2, 1996.
Ravinder Singh, the owner of the car, had lodged a complaint with the police.
Indal was arrested and taken to Mahrauli police station for interrogation.
However, the court acquitted Inspector Buddhi Prakash, then Addl SHO, due to lack of any evidence.
Kanwar Pal, a home guard, was absconding and was declared a proclaimed offender(PO) by the court.
During the investigation, it was found that Indal had no injury on his body when he was taken for medical examination on the day of his arrest at the AIIMS. But he was under the influence of liquor, the charge-sheet said.
On January 3, 1996, when he was taken to the hospital, the doctors declared him brought dead.
During the post mortem, the doctors had found at least 20 injuries on the body which nailed the police officials.
After finding the evidence and the arguments of the prosecution, the court convicted all three and posted February 6 for pronouncing quantum of sentence.
