Chandra Shekhar appeals for support to Cong in Punjab

New Delhi, Feb 2 (UNI) Former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar today appealed to the people of Punjab and his partymen to support the congress in the coming Assembly elections in Punjab for peace, prosperity and stability in the state.

"The Congress party has been striving for communal harmony which is the foundation of our Republic," the former Prime Minister said in a statement issued here.

''I appeal to the people of Punjab to realise the gravity of the situation and to vote for the Congress candidates for peace, prosperity and stability in Punjab," Mr Chandra Shekhar said.

He said it was unfortunAte feature of the present day politics that parties based on caste and communal appeal were trying to divide the society on narrow considerations."It is patriotic duty of all citizens to defeat such forces. with this in mind, the Samajwadi Janata Party (Rashtriya) has decided to support the Congress party in Punjab Assembly elections except in the constituencies where Samajavadi Janata Party (Rashtriya) is itself contesting." UNI
