NCM's annual report, ATR to be tabled in Parliament: Cabinet
New Delhi, Feb 1 (UNI) The Union Cabinet today gave its approval for placing of the Action Taken Memorandum on the recommendations contained in the Eighth Annual Report (2000-01) of the National Commission for Minorities in both Houses of Parliament.
The main functions of the Commission are to evaluate the progress of the development of minorities, monitor the working of the safeguards provided in the Constitution and in laws enacted by the Central Government/State Governments for the protection of the interests of minorities.
It also looks into specific complaints regarding deprivation of rights and safeguards of the minorities. It causes studies, research and analyses to be undertaken on the issues relating to socio-economic and educational development of minorities and make recommendations for the effective implementation of the safeguards for the protection of the interest of minorities.
The Eighth Annual Report 26 recommendations in Chapter 15 relating to Conclusions and Recommendations. Of these, ten recommendations concern State Governments and remaining sixteen recommendations relate to the Central Government. This will meet the statutory requirement of Section 13 of the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992.
The Report will be laid on the Table of both Houses of Parliament in the Budget Session.
