Akola, Feb 1 (UNI) Congress corporator Aliyar Khan, popularly known as Allu Pahelwan, and his son Azad Khan were arrested for allegedly creating disturbance at a polling centre in the sensitive Bhandpura area of the old city today, according to District Superintendent of Police Shantaram Waghmare.

The area falls under ward No 37 where the apprehended corporators's wife Taherabi is contesting the election as an Independent candidate.

SP Waghmare said the polling agent of another candidate asked a burkha-clad Muslim woman voter about her identity. Agitated over this, Khan and his some supporters allegedly ransacked the polling centre this afternoon. They tore documents related to election and even damaged some furniture.

Following the incident, the presiding officer R D Waitkar filed a complaint with the police.

Later, a mob indulged in heavy stone-pelting, in which four police personnel, including Police Sub Inspector (PSI) Aaglave, PSI Nandu Kale, Constable Ashish Thakur and policeman Chandan were injured.

Following this, the police resorted to a lathicharge to disperse the mob, police said.

According to an eyewitness account, Khan allegedly smashed his head against a hard material, causing injuries to his head. He and his son were taken to a hospital for medical treatment, police said.

However, voters in large numbers were seen standing in a queue to exercise their franchise. Heavy police bandobast has been made at the polling centre. The situation was tense but under control, police said.
