Editors Guild condemns ULFA's threat to Editors of Asom dailies
New Delhi, Feb 1 (UNI) Editors Guild of India ( EGI)today condemned the coercionary statements of United Liberation Front of Asom against the editors of two daily newspapers in Asom.
A statement released by the EGI here termed it as serious assault on the freedom of the Press.
The ''advice'' to quit journalism given by ULFA to Dainik Agradoot Editor Kanakasen Deka and Dainik Asam Editor D N Chakravarty was totally unacceptable and an expression of intolerance, the statement said.
''The demand is a crude attempt to gag the press in Asom,'' it added.
The Guild upheld the right of editors to freely express their opinion and said there should be no pressure on editors from governmental or non-governmental sources.
It called upon editors and journalists in Asom to function fearlessly, and extended support to their right to practice journalism amidst pressure tactics of those who were intolerant towards 'free press'.
The Guild urged the government and the civil society to also extend protection to the editors and journalists of Dainik Agardoot and Dainik Assam to carry out their journalistic functions without any obstacle or threat.
