EC announces biennial election schedule for eight J

New Delhi, Feb 1 (UNI) The biennial elections to the eight legislative council seats in Jammu and Kashmir will be held on March 5, the Election Commission today announced.

The counting of votes will be taken up from 1500 hours on the same day and the whole process would be completed by March 8, an EC release said.

The first seat will fall vacant on March 10 following the retirement of Mr Abdul Rashid Dar. The present term for the rest of the seats will expire on March 17.

The seats from Kashmir that would fall vacant were held by Abdul Rahman Tukroo, Gholam Rasool Kar and Gholam Nabi Shaheen. The other four from the Jammu regions were currently being represented by Mr Abdul Rashid Dar, Iqbal Bhat (Doda), Brij Mohan, Mohammad Hussan and Nazir Ahmad Mir.

The notification for the seats will be issued on February 15. The last date for filing nominations is February 21 and that of scrutiny February 22.

The last date for the withdrawal of nominations is being fixed for February 24.
