Chennai, Feb 1 (UNI) The Centre has chalked out a programme to link the women Self Help Groups (SHG) with the Leather producers and the International Leather market in a bid to help the small women entrepreneurs.

Speaking at the inauguration of India International Leather Fair at Chennai Trade Centre here yesterday, Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh said the programme to link the women SHGs with the Leather producers and the International Leather market will boost the Leather sector across the country.

The Union Commerce Ministry has also decided to extend this programme to seven more districts across the country, he said adding, out of seven, two would be launched in Vellore and Thiruvallur Districts in Tamil Nadu. Agra, Kolkata and Kanpur will be the other beneficiaries, he added ''Through this programme, we are sure that the benefits from the exports would reach not only the people who are on top, but also for all sections in the trade,'' he said.

The proposed project would cost about Rs seven crore, he underlined.

He also urged the Indian Leather exporters to focus more on footwear exports, especially on women and children to compete in the International market.
