SMC plans to release 1.5 lakh fishes into Tapi to clean water
Surat, Jan 31 (UNI) Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has decided to release 1.5 lakh fishes into Tapi river to make it pollution-free and rid it of organisms that have grown in the river, SMC sources said here today.
As many as 50,000 grass carps, 50,000 common carps, 25,000 tilapias and 25,000 rohu fishes will be released into the water to reduce pollution by increasing the content of oxygen in the water.
This project is undertaken at the cost of Rs 21 lakh.
The fishes will eat away organisms and vegetation in the water thus keeping it pollution-free.
The decision to release fishes into the water was taken at the behest of suggestion from zoological and environmental experts and eminent insitutions, sources added.
