Punjab assembly polls at a glance

Chandigarh, Jan 31 (UNI) Punjab which goes to the polls next month has a total electorate on 1,69,19,848 voters, of which 81,54,515 are females spread over 117 assembly constituencies.

X X X X Ludhiana Rural assembly segment with 4,65,263 voters, has the largest electorate while Amritsar Central has just about 68,000 votes, the least in any constituency. Area wise Dakha is the largest assembly constituency.

X X X X There are 1050 candidates in the electoral fray, surpassing the last assembly poll number of 923. Of these 49 contestants are women while the 2002 elections there were 70 women.

X X X X The least number of candidates, three are in Dasuya segment while the most, 18 each are in Ludhiana Rural and Patiala.

X X X X There will be 16,751 pollings booths out which 1034 are hyper sensitive and another 4797 are sensitive. A total of 21,375 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be used for casting votes.

X X X X The two prominent chief ministerial candidates---Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh is locked in a 18 cornerned contest in Patiala while Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief and former chief minister Prakash Singh Badal is involved in a eight cornered contest at Lambi.

X X X X Amongst the political parties that Congress has fielded 10 women candidates while SAD has fielded five and its ally the BJP just one. Prominent women contestants include Deputy Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and (Lehra Gagga), Razia Sultan (Malerkotla) while the SAD women heaveyweights are former Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandik Committee (SGPC) chief Bibi Jagir Kaur (Bholath) and former minister Dr Upenderjit Kaur (Sultanpur Lodhi). The BJP has fielded a lone woman---the firebrand Laxmi Kanta Chawla from Amritsar Central.

X X X X There are three father-son contestants in the election fray.

Former minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh (Banur) and his son Jasjit Singh (Kharar), both of the SAD. Former minister and BJP candidate Swarana Ram (Phagwara-reserve) and his son Mohan Lal of the SAD from Banga (reserve). The third father-son team is that of SAD (Amritsar) chief and former MP, Simranjit Singh Mann (Dhaanula) and Iman Singh (Sirhind). Swarana Ram and his son Mohan Lal are contesting their third straight assembly election.

X X X X The brother-sister duo in the polls are Mrs Bhattal from Lehra Gagga and her brother Kuldip Singh Bhattal from Dhanaula who is contesting on the Congress ticket. Senior minister Gurkamal Kaur the Congress nominee from Jalandhar Cantt and her brother Tej Prakash Singh who is the Congress candidate from Payal. Gurkamal and Tej Prakash are the daughter and son respectively of former chief minister, the late Beant Singh.

X X X X There are two former chief ministers--Mr Badal and Mrs Bhattal in the election fray alongwith the current chief minister. Mrs Bhattal remained the chief minister for a brief period just prior to the 1997 elections, which the Congress party lost. Mr Badal has been chief minister thrice--1969, 1978 and 1997. The SAD chief has remained in the chief ministerial chair the longest period--- eight years and ten months, followed by Mr Pratap Singh Kairon (Congress) who remained CM at one stretch for eight years and five months. For Capt Singh this was his first term as CM.
