Major's task to turn IAF a potent aerospace power

Shillong, Jan 31: Air chief designate Air Chief Marshal Fali Homi Major today said his prime task would be to carry forward the Indian Air Force (IAF) vision and turn it into what he called ''a potent aerospace power''.

In a brief interaction with UNI at the Eastern Air Command base at Upper Shillong here today, Air chief Marshal Major said the IAF was already poised for joining front ranking nations as an aerospace power.

''We are fully aware of India's place in the changing world scenario and the importance of aerospace in projection of military power,'' he said.

''We are already gearing to become an aerospace power in tune with the requirements of changing global military scene,'' Air Marshal Major added.

However, the designated Air Chief refused to comment when asked to point out his top priorities when he takes charge saying ''It is unethical and not correct to speak now on this subject as I am yet to assume the top post.'' Brushing aside all speculations that he would not be 'suitable' to take over as the Air Chief of the IAF, Major said he would make efforts to put the IAF flag flying high.

''It does not matter whether I am from the helicopter wing or a fighter pilot. The IAF is a competent force and we will do our job well,'' he candidly said.

Air Marshal Major who commanded the first MI-17 Squadron was the helicopter pilot to succeed the highest post of the IAF in the history of the country. He also created a history of sorts to become the first Air Chief from the Eastern Air Command.

''I am very happy and honoured that the Union government had appointed me as the Air Chief of IAF and my task now is to synergise and to take the IAF forward and make it a potent aerospace power,'' When asked, Major who would take over from Air Chief Marshal S P Tyagi on April 1 next maintained that ''it won't be a problem for him to handle the job, as there are enough men in the IAF to look after it''.

''I don't think so. We will all work together and make it to be one of the best Air Force in the world,'' he reiterated.
