Shillong, Jan 31 (UNI) Designate Air Chief Marshal Fali Homi Major today assured that the Indian Air Force (IAF) would continue to support the Indian Army in counter-insurgency operation in any part of the country.

'' We have been helping the Army and other security forces and will continue to play our significant role in every sphere, '' Air Marshal Major told UNI at the Eastern Air Command base at Upper Shillong here.

Air Marshal Major, the top boss of the Eastern Air Command, will take over from Air Chief Marshal S P Tyagi on April 1.

Air Marshal Major, who commanded the first MI-17 Squadron, was the helicopter pilot to succeed the highest post of the IAF in the history of the country. He also created a history of sorts to become the first Air Chief from the Eastern Air Command.

On the ongoing combing operation against the outlawed ULFA in Asom, Air Marshal Major said the IAF would continue to render all operational support to security forces whenever needed.

When asked on Myanmar's seeking air defence help to flush out North East-based militant operating in its territory, Major said he was not aware of such help sought by Yangon.
