Gotheborg in time capsule, relives 18th century

Chennai, Jan 31 (UNI) The replica of the 18th century Swedish sailing vessel ''Gotheborg'' and its crew were accorded a traditional and rousing reception when the ship docked at the Chennai Port today.

It was a historical occasion as for the first time in 260 years an East India man set sail from a Swedish harbour to China in October 2005 to mark an expedition around the world, travelling along the same route as the historical trade vessels followed in the 18th century.

The ship is retracing the historical route to China, passing India and the Mediterranean during the homebound voyage.

After covering various countries, Gotherborg called on at the Chennai Port today after a 17-day travel from Singapore.

At a formal reception at the Chennai Port, Swedish Deputy Prime Minster Maud Olofsson, Charge d'Affairs of Swedish Embassy Harald Falth, Tamil Nadu Governor S S Barnala, Union Shipping Minister T R Baalu, Port Trust Chairman K Suresh and officials from the Coast Guard and Navy welcomed the vessel, which would be docked here for 11 days.

There was never a dull moment through the nearly 75-minute function during which the visiting crew were treated to rich culture and heritage of Tamil Nadu.

It all began with a 11-gun salute from the ship signifying they were emptying their ammunition and entering the yard as friends and it was reciprocated from the Indian side, welcoming it with a sense of friendship and allowing it to dock at the port.

Colour balloons depicting the flags of both India and Sweden were released before the crew and dignitaries were treated to the traditional folk dances of Tamil Nadu like ''Poikkal Kuthirai,'' ''Kaavadi'' and ''Karakattam.'' The crew sang the welcome song and it was followed by the anthem of the ship ''Gotherborg''. Even as the anthem was being played, Captain Peter Kaaling was introduced to the VIPs.
