Gogoi, PM to discuss security at National Games
New Delhi, Jan 31: Asom Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and requested him for early despatch of additional para military forces to the state in view of the growing attacks by ULFA, days ahead of the National Games.
Mr Gogoi held a brief discussion with the Prime Minister on the latest law and order situation in the state. He also apprised Dr Singh of the security measures being taken by his government to ensure peace during the 33rd National Games starting in Guwahati from February 9.
Later, the Chief Minister held a meeting with Home Minister Shivraj Patil and discussed the security situation in the state which has been witnessing a spate of violent attacks perpetrated by ULFA, primarily targeting Hindi-speaking people.
Dr Singh had recently visited Tinsukia and other violence affected areas of Asom after the recent attacks by ULFA which left nearly 70 dead, mostly labourers from Bihar.
Mr Gogoi also urged Dr Singh to sanction a special development programme to enhance employment and promote tourism and also develop the vast riverine areas along the Brahmaputra. The Prime Minister has assured favourable consideration, a state government spokesman said.
He also requested the Prime Minister to keep Asom out of the purview of delimitation.
Later speaking to newspersons outside the Prime Minister's residence, Mr Gogoi said UPA Chairperson and Congress President Sonia Gandhi will formally inaugurate the 33rd National Games.
The Prime Mnister is scheduled to attend the closing ceremony of the Games on February 18.
Mr Gogoi also had a meting with Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia regarding the finalisation of the state's annual plan allocation.
Meanwhile, the ULFA has challenged the Northeast Television channel to prove its allegations that the outfit had taken Rs 10 crore from the Government to withdraw the boycott call against the National Games. The militants warned that the channel would have to wind up its operations in the state if it failed to prove the charge.
