Guwahati, Jan 31: Father of the Nation, Gandhiji's peace movement is perhaps the most relevant one for the people of Asom to adopt now, at a time when innocent citizens are victims of terror acts.

This was the idea, mooted by the Citizen's Forum Against Violence, Asom, the state unit of the Karturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust, on the occasion of Martyrs' Day yesterday.

Referring to the recent carnage of Hindi-speaking people in the state, the Forum appealed to the extremist groups perpetrating violence in the state to forsake it for the greater good of the state.

It pointed out that targeting people from outside the state merely on the basis of language or native state would expose the people of Asom, residing in other states, to similar aggression.

Moreover, such acts of violence tarnished the image of the state and threatened the integrity of the nation as a whole, it said.

The Forum maintained the need to adopt Gandhian ways for putting up resistance against violence, adding Gandhiji's way of non-violence was the most relevant one for Asom at the current juncture.
