Delhi to have 625 new buses

New Delhi, Jan 31 (UNI) Delhi Transport Department will acquire 625 new buses and build 225 new bus shelters across the city, in an attempt to gear up for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

In a review meeting chaired by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit it was stated that DTC was going to place purchase order for 625 new buses that would be on roads within a few months.

The corporation had also initiated the process of recruiting 2,485 drivers and in the meanwhile appointed 250 daily wage drivers to overcome shortage.

The chief minister was informed that 225 modern and attractive bus shelters would be ready by November this year. There were 5,000 bus stops and 2,500 bus shelters in the capital at present.

In the first phase, 225 bus shelters would be replaced with modern ones on all routes connecting venues of the Commonwealth Games, airports, railway stations and sections of the Ring Roads.

Ms Dikshit directed DTC to introduce more quality buses keeping in view the requirement during Commonwealth Games. It was decided to expedite this process and also make available mini buses during the games.

While Delhi Integrated Multi-modal Transport System had been entrusted work to redevelop Kashmiri Gate Inter State Bus Terminal by next year, Ms Dikshit asked DTC to initiate at the earliest construction of ISBTs at Sarai Kale Khan and Dwarka. Redevelopment of Kashmiri Gate ISBT would include beautification of its surroundings.

For the first time DTC had come out with a comprehensive route map of its city services.

Ms Dikshit instructed the corporation to display the newly-developed DTC route map on all entry points to Delhi, airports, railway stations, ISBTs, DTC depots and other congested places in the capital to enable the commonman to acquaint himself with the routes and bus connectivity.

She further directed it to come out with a folded version of the route plan that could be distributed in colleges and other places of tourist interest.

Ms Dikshit exhorted senior officials of the Transport Department to bring improvements in public transport system and introduce modern, attractive and convenient buses in the national capital.

She was also apprised that DTC had managed to maintain its last fiscal year's figure of per kilometre earning this fiscal too.

The meeting was attended by state Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf, Principal Secretary (Transport), Principal Secretary (Finance), DTC Chairman and Manager Director and senior PWD officials.
