Ranchi, Jan 31 (UNI) CPI(M) politburo member Brinda Karat today strongly defended Singur project in West Bengal, saying the Congress and BJP were shedding "crocodile tears" and the protest by Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee sounded "meaningless".

Asserting that the rehabilitation package in this small car project was unique, Ms Karat, also in-charge of Jharkhand, said the West Bengal government had not given the land for construction of golf course or any other venture of that sort.

The West Bengal government set precedence by its rehabiltaion package as the land owners got market value and share croppers were also given 25 per cent of the land cost, she said at a press conference here.

Besides, plan was being worked out to provide jobs for farm labourers, she said.

The CPI(M) leader claimed that through the small car industry the government wanted to generate job employment, while BJP president Rajnath Singh and Congress leader Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi were shedding "crocodile tears" over the issue.

Asked on ms banerjee's crusade against it, Ms Karat said even the Trinamool Congress leader's protest was "meaningless".

She refused to compare the Singur controversy to SEZ issue and stressed the need for introdusing common standard for SEZ all over the country.

She said the UPA government at the Centre was following the erstwhile NDA that resulted in price hike.

She cited high price of petrol and diesel despite its slash at the international market to justify her point.
