Wipro Technologies to leverage new workforce streams in city

Chennai, Jan 30 (UNI) Wipro Technologies, the IT services business of Wipro was planning to sustain its aggressive hiring to increase and leverage new workforce streams in Chennai.

Talking to newspersons here today, Chandrasekar Dharuman, Vice-President and Location Head of the company said to ensure high retention, Wipro focuses on building leaders by providing early opportunities and the option for cross cultural growth.

Dr Chandrasekar said the company has a systematic and rubust process for planning, implementing, reviewing and evaluating performance for employees.

Key strategic HR practices, such as, the scalability enablers that Wipro use to managing large-scale employee process, as well as their various innovative HR practices to enable Wipro to continue to build their global brand and reach the customers around the globe, he added.

The company's HR and Executive Vice-President Pratik Kumar said all employees of the company were given an opportunity to become a leader. The company has a number of women-friendly policies and was the first Indian IT company to offer telecommuting and was also one of the first IT companies to extended maternity, he claimed.

Mr Kumar said with over 13,000 women employees around, the company has one of the largest employees of women in the industry.

He said currently the company has four operating centres in and around Chennai with a head-count of 7000-plus employees servicing all businesses represented here. The company's facility at suburban Sholinganallur would be the single largest facility on 102 acres with 7500 seats to be made available this year in two phases, he added.

He said the 95 acres land in Mahendra city and seven acre land in Coimbatore were also on the radar for future expansion this year.

He claimed that their company was recently ranked six in the American Society for Training and Development's 2006 best awards programme. The company was among 39 organisations from India, South Africa and the United States to receive the ASTD best award and the only Indian IT organisation to win the award three years in a row, he added.

To a question, he said they visited 35 engineering colleges this year in Tamil Nadu and about 1000 engineering graduates were recruited from the State in 2006-07.
