Chennai, Jan 30 (UNI) Dismissing as a ''tale'' AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa's contention the Adam's Bridge, also called the Ramar Bridge, at Palk straits had historical significance, the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) today urged the Centre to go ahead with the dredging work at Sethu Samudram Canal Project (SSCP) unmindful of criticism.

In a statement here, PMK President G K Mani said the AIADMK supremo, who had initially claimed credit for the project, was now attempting to stall it due to political animosity.

''She is trying to whip up communal passions by spreading tales the bridge was built by Lord Ram,'' he added.

What was being claimed as 'Ramar Bridge' was nothing but sand mounds under the sea between Rameswaram and Talaimannar in Sri Lanka, he said and added the National Aeronautical and Space Agency (NASA) of the United States had already clarified in this regard.

Though some forces in a foreign country had failed in their mission to attach historical significance to the bridge, Ms Jayalalithaa was attempting to use it as a weapon against the project, he claimed.

Ms Jayalalithaa had warned her party would move court if the ongoing dredging work at SSCP 'which caused destruction of Adam's Bridge' was not immediately stopped.
