Port Blair, Jan 30 (UNI) Hundreds of people today paid tributes to those killed by Japanese forces here during Second World War.

The Chief Secretary Andaman and Nicobar Administration paid floral tributes in the function at Humfreygunj village in South Andaman, where more than 44 innocent islanders were shot dead by Japanese forces, on this day.

A memorial stands at the site which is 19 kilometres away from Port Blair. The local Administration arranged bus service for the programme.

During World War II, Andaman and Nicobar Islands were captured by Japanese forces on March 21, 1942, and kept the region under their control till October 8, 1945.

The Supreme Court had recently issued notice to the Centre on a petition complaining that about Rs 68 lakh compensation awarded by the Japanese Government to families of the victims has so far not reached the beneficiaries.

The petition filed by Homfraygung Martyrs Memorial Committee through counsels R C Kohli and Bhupender Yadav alleged that though the compensation amount was awarded in two instalments between 1952 and 1963, the same has not been disbursed to the victims by the Centre.
