Jammu , Jan 30 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today said the piousness of the spirit lies in serving the cause of humanity and asked people to stand by the principles of Mahatma Gandhi who stirred the world through non-violence.

Mr Azad was paying tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his martyrdom day at a function organised by Akhil Bharat Rachnatmak Samaj and Sadbhavana-ke-Sipahi here.

Mr Azad said since civilisation came into existence, right thinking and peace loving people had always resisted the forces of terror. ''Namrood, Yazeed, Hitler, General Dyer and thousands of such figures which are symbol of condemnations were championing the forces of violence and using the method of terror to silence forces of peace, love and brotherhood,'' he said.

''In such a situation remembering Gandhiji on this very day reminds us also of the ugly fate of those who try to silence the phenomenon of love and peace," he said.

The chief minister described Gandhiji as a real visionary who could peep through the darkness of violence and detect the glittering ray of love and hope in Kashmir.

Stressing the need for propagating philosophy of non-violence, tolerance and peace, he said these are more relevant today and for all times to come.
