Cong in a leadership role on Gandhian ideals

New Delhi, Jan 30 (UNI) The Congress today said the two-day global conference on Satyagraha Movement,organised by it,had served to put the party in a leadership role in the context of Gandhian ideals among the countries that participated in it.

The Conference,attended by over 200 delegates from 90 countries and 122 organisations,had put the party in a mediatory and moderating role among the participating nations,Congress Spokesman for the Confeence Devendra Dwivedi said.

He told reporters here the delegates from the participating countries expected the Congress to play the lead role in building up consensus towards resolution of conflicts and to show direction to them. ''The Congress is on a consensus building role in the context of Gandhian ideals.'' Just as Mahatma Gandhi had experimented with truth on being faced with problems as narrated by him in his autobiography, several organisations were trying to evolve new techniques within the parameteres of the Gandhian philosophy to resolve the conflicts, Mr Dwivedi said.

Describing the holding of the two day global conference as a ''major initiative'' taken by Congress President Sonia Gandhi, he said ''structured and high level discussions'' had taken place during the two day conference. The party would prepare a note on the theme, content and the achievements of the discussion for distribution later.

The confernce had also served to arrive at a consensus on the fundamentals of Gandhism, he said.
